Developer:

I have excessive retained silver reading on my film, after I replaced my film developer. My tech support adviced me to replace my bleach. Same problem exist after replacing my bleach. What caused them?
You did not use or did not have enough starter on film developer. Over developed film will have excessive retained silver, even strong bleach can not remove them. Adding starter will reduce the strength of your developer.

Recently, I found my customer's film will always have very extreme over exposure on the face on most flash pictures, what caused them?
Your developer has become more stronger through evaporation. Use density  reducer to weaken your film developer.

How do I know if I have over developed customer's film?
You can use control strip to test your developer, provided they are fresh. If control strip is not handy, you can very easily determine your developer's strength by visually inspecting the film leads. When you inspect the exposed portion through light, you should be able easily see through with a brown black colour. The index should have reasonable density. The unexposed portion should be clear and very transparent.

My film developer is getting weak in about two months time. I keep on replacing them. Is there any better method to reduce my work?
You film developer turning bad quickly is because of low utilization. Low utilzation is caused by either low volume of business or developing tank too large which can not turn over in short time. Increase your replenishment rate can accelerate your turn over.

My Blue Dmin is always high on my control strip, what cause it?
Dmin reading is fog. Fog can be cause by old control strip, old developer, developer too strong. If you reading is not too far, ignore it.

What caused Leuco Cyan dye?
Leuco Cyan dye is usually caused by fresh bleach which has too low PH. It happen more often on professional film than on amateur film. You shouln't worry too much about them.

Bleach:

What symptom is under bleached?
On inspecting the emulsion side of the film, a black silver image can be seen by reflecting to light.

Is under bleach always caused by the bleached?
No, some under bleach problem is mistakenly taken as bleach problem. In fact it was over developed.

Why over develop can be shown as bleach problem?
It is because over developing can produce excessive retain silver of which a normal bleach strength can not remove them.

What should I do if my film is under bleached?
Fix your chemistry trouble, re-run your film through the machine, or treat your film externally with chemical bath.

Should I replace my film bleach if it is proven to be weak?
No. Film bleach is highly regeneratable. You can just add concentrated bleach solution into the working tank. The volume can be 10% per addition untill problem disappear. PH reducer can also be added as stop bath.

One moring, when I turn on my machine, I found my pump is not working because of my bleach is all solidify. Is my chemistry turned bad?
No. Chemistry crystal out is because of loosing water through vaporation. It is a natural physical phenomenon. This trouble happens quite often on process C41RA machines. You can just add water to dissolve the crystal. To prevent this problem to happen again. Top up you working tank more often.

Can my film be over bleached?
Film has more silver content than paper, over bleach would not have too much problem.

Fix:

What symptom is under fix?
Film will have a milky, or unclear appearance on the transparent part. It is caused by silver halide insufficiently dissolved by the fixer.

Can a film be over fixed?
Over fixing is not a problem.

I have metal silver processing marks on my film, what caused them?
Silver re-deposition on your film is caused by excessive silver halide dissolved in the fixer. You should wash your racks and replace with new fixer. To prevent trouble again, increase replenishment rate.

I have yellow gray powder in my fixer, what caused them?
Sulphurization is caused by long standing or oxidation of fixer. This trouble happen more often on Fuji System 23 machines because the overflow bleach went into the fixer tank oxidize the fixer. If you want to save the cost of replacing with new chemistry. You can filter the old chemistry. Add anti-oxidant.

One moring, when I turn on my machine, I found my pump is not working because of my fixer is all solidify. Is my chemistry turned bad?

Wash:

I have processing marks on my film, what caused them?
Processing marks are caused by dirty racks. The first wash is the most dirty rack.

Stabilizer:

I have white powder on the first run of my film, what caused them?
New stabilizer which does not use formaldehide because it can cause cancer, can leave white powders on the cellolose side of the film usually in the first run. You can just wipe them off. For best quality, you can use old formula.

Dry:

What caused dry marks?
Dry marks are caused by squeege not wiping properly on your machine.
